KOCHI: These are the days when the streets of the temples of Tripunithura come alive in a myriad of hues. Vrischikolsavam, the annual festival of Lord Poornathrayeesa, saw thousands of devotees thronging the temple on Thursday to witness the kanikkayidal trikketta, the presentation of offerings in the deity’s grand procession.

“The idol of Lord Poornathrayeesan will be taken in a procession with a golden umbrella, golden headdress and paraphernalia. Devotees can present their offerings in the golden pot. The oldest member of the Kovilakam will present the first offering,” said said S Anujan, a member of the royal family.

The festivities will begin with seeveli and pancharimelam at 7.30am. Renowned percussionists including Peruvanam Kuttan Marar, Thiruvalla Radhakrishna Marar, Peruvanam Satheesan Marar, Kizhakoott Aniyan Marar, Pazhuvil Raghu Marar and Chowalloor Mohanan Nair will lead the pancharimelam ensemble in which more than 100 artists will participate. The vilakkinezhunnellathu will last until 2am. No less than 15 caparisoned elephants will parade during the processions.

The cultural program starts with Ottanthullal at noon followed by akshara sloka sadas, nadaswara concert, carnatic music concert and Kathakali.

The Kathakali show will start at midnight and continue until 7:30 am. Folk performances like Kurathiyattam and Kolkali will take place in the evening. The festival will end with arattu on November 28.

“The people of the city have a culture of patronizing the arts, and the new generation is also eager to learn traditional arts,” Anujan said.
